Barb’s hymn to her beloved home town of Stockport, Last Orders Mersey Square is a love affair over a summer long gone and a love letter to the place where she grew up.
“In 2012 when I recorded my album Stockport to Memphis, I wrote Last Orders Mersey Square with Simon Wallace, but it didn’t make the final record. Recently, passing through the area again while on the train I thought about ‘Last Orders Mersey Square’. It’s my love letter to the Stockport I love, the Stockport of old mill towers, canals and famous rivers, of red brick terraces and looming moors. It’s a love story, of a beautiful interlude in the summer of 1972. We met at a poetry reading in the pub in Mersey Square and kissed our way through every pub in Underbank. Then it was over, like the summer.”
“Now feels like the perfect time to get the song out there. Recorded at Simon’s studio with him playing everything and producing, ‘Last Orders Mersey Square’ is about when that pub bell rings to tell us, it’s time to go. I may no longer live there, but parts of you never leave.”
